PROFESSIONAL YEAR ROUND

PROFESSIONAL YEAR ROUND

TWO TO FOUR YEARS GRADES 9-12

ABOUT THE
PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

The Professional Program is for the serious-minded dance student grades 9 through 12. Most students who attend The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory and participate in the Professional Program are already familiar with the basic structure of classical ballet from their previous schools. An intense daily training program, The Nutmeg’s program focuses on methodical training in the fundamentals of technique and classical ballet theory classes.

Talented high school freshmen (4 year Program), and/or sophomores, juniors and seniors (2 year program), complete their secondary education through our in-house academic program, The Nutmeg CAP (Conservatory Academic Program). Those students who are not from the immediate area take up residency in The Nutmeg’s dormitory or one of the historical homes in Torrington, Connecticut owned by The Nutmeg for the specific purpose of providing housing for students and guest artists.

Students are eligible for either a Certificate of Completion after two or four years of academic study. The Nutmeg measures its courses based on hours and student work is reviewed at the end of each semester. This special program of evaluation has been designed to offer each student a personal meeting with a staff member to review their work and provide them with a brief written statement of individual progress.

ABOUT THE
PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

The Nutmeg’s Year Round programs provide an environment in which young dancers flourish as artists both technically and artistically. Designed for the serious dance student, the programs are physically and mentally challenging, with approximately six hours of studio work daily, six days a week. Time in the studio is geared not only to gaining technical proficiency, but to preparing the students for the numerous performance opportunities available each season.

All students interact with the entire faculty, whether they are students in the Ten Year Program who have come up through Nutmeg’s school (the Torrington School of Ballet) or students in one of the Two Year or Four Year Programs. While levelling of students is determined by the faculty based on proficiency and age, class size and level placement are designed to maximize a student’s success and encourage individualized attention.

Those students who do not live locally are housed in The Nutmeg’s dormitories under the supervision of our Director of Housing and Resident Assistants. Students who have not yet received a high school diploma or its equivalent must be enrolled in The Nutmeg’s Conservatory Academic Program (CAP)

THE POST HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM:TWO YEARS

This growing Post-High School Program is an acceleration of the work of the Vaganova method. It is designed for the dancer who seeks additional technical and performance training in a performance-oriented student company prior to auditioning for a professional position. It is equally well suited for students who wish to dance more intensively and then continue their academic careers in a college or university setting.

Students who graduate from the two-year Residency Program are also eligible to continue in the Post-High School Program if deemed appropriate and students coming to The Nutmeg in their senior year of high school may stay one or two years more in the Post-High School Program. A student need not attend our high school residency program in order to attend the post high school program.

TWO & FOUR YEAR
PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance*, the Two Year and Four Year Pre-Professional Programs are generally geared for high school age dancers; however, 8th grade students may be accepted if shown to possess adequate training and maturity.

Students completing the full two or four years receive a Diploma of completion indicating they have successfully finished the accredited program. A student with Nutmeg for a shorter duration is eligible for a Certificate indicating his/her participation in the program.

TWO YEAR
POST-GRADUATE PROGRAM

Like our Two and Four Year programs, the Two Year Post-Graduate Program is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance* and students successfully completing the two years are awarded a Diploma. This program offers students additional technical and performance training in a performance-oriented student company prior to auditioning for a professional company or college dance program. While many Nutmeg students who participate and graduate from our Two and Four year programs elect to stay for another year or two as a Post-Grad, a student need not attend our high school age residency programs in order to attend the Post-Grad Program.

Post-grad students, having completed high school, have the opportunity to design an individual program of study during morning hours at The Nutmeg. Students have enrolled in college courses; found employment in the area; designed fitness regimens that have included the local YMCA and area yoga and Pilates studios; and, when available, completed work/study tasks at The Nutmeg. Additionally, the post-grad students are used, at the discretion of the artistic faculty, in various community performances.
