Students high school aged or younger live within The Nutmeg’s main dormitory facility located in The Nutmeg building and are supervised by the live-in Housing Director, who resides on the same floor as the students. Student Resident Assistants (RAs) – who directly assist the Housing Director – are also present within the dorm area. Security card access and surveillance video security systems are in place throughout the main building complex.
Students in the Year-Round Post-Grad program are given the choice of living within The Nutmeg dormitory or renting one of the many apartments in the downtown area that are within walking distance. Other housing opportunities exist for those with transportation available to them.
Students enrolled in one of our summer programs are housed in the dormitory within our facility and/or placed in a historic campus house that is within walking distance of The Nutmeg building.
The Nutmeg provides a “continental’ style breakfast each morning and students have their choice of cereal, bagels, toast, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola, English muffins, etc. Nutritious lunches are also served in our second floor lounge after the academic session finishes and prior to the students transitioning to the studio. Dinners are prepared and served at The Elks Club a block away, where the students enjoy eating in the Grand Ballroom. Each Saturday, students are provided with a stipend to use for dinner in one of the many area restaurants, enjoying each other’s company and the downtown setting.
The Nutmeg has a special arrangement with The Elks Club such that students in the summer programs are provided with three fresh and nutritionally balanced meals daily, seven days a week. Only a block away and across from Torrington’s beautiful Coe Park, the meals are served in the Elks Grand Ballroom, providing the students with a beautiful dining environment.
Nutritious and healthy meals are prepared daily by Denis Fraunhauffer our Food Program Coordinator. Nutmeg Conservatory has a special agreement with St. Francis Parochial School which has provided us with the use of their School Cafeteria located only two blocks away from the main Nutmeg Building Complex. The school provides an excellent environment for our food service program. Students receive three fresh and nutritionally balanced meals Monday – Saturday.
On Sunday a mid-day brunch and paper bag super is served and has become a favorite amongst our residential students. All summer meals are served in the cafeteria except for occasional evening pizza parties which are held in the dorms and houses.
Prior to arrival at The Nutmeg, parents will be asked to fill out a special meal form request indicating what special dietary needs a student may have due to food allergies or restrictions due to other reasons. Our food service team will make every effort to reasonably accommodate special needs.
(Note: An additional fee may be required depending on the extent of special need)
