ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC  DIRECTOR & NATIONAL TOUR AUDITION CO-DIRECTOR

JOAN KUNSCH

Joan Kunsch is now in her 31st year on Nutmeg’s classical ballet faculty, Joan’s 2018 season includes the 26th annual Nutmeg National Audition Tour; serving as guest teacher/choreographer for the International Ballet Workshop, Estonian National Theater, Tallinn; guest teaching Ballet Idaho company classes and for the Univ. of Utah Dance Dept. Her choreography (USA, Norway, Sweden, Canada) includes works for concert stage, sacred space, TV and outdoor sites such as Jacob’s Pillow. She has guest taught in leading ballet schools of Stockholm (Balettakademien & The Swedish Ballet School), London (The Royal Ballet School White Lodge & RAD Teacher Training), Oslo (Kirkenaer Ballettskolen), Reykjavik (Iceland’s National Ballet School), Halifax (Maritime Conservatory) and around the USA. She was Ballet Mistress to MOMIX and Ballet Mississippi, has taught by invitation of Pilobolus dancers, the CT Classic Competition, and the dance departments of the U.of Utah, Butler, SMU, & SUNY-Binghamton. 

Dancers she has co-trained have joined over 70 companies, including New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, more. Closer to home, she guest teaches at the Taft School, Brass City Ballet and White River Ballet Academy (VT). Publications: “Playing With Gravity” (poetry, Antrim House, 2007) and CD (2011); a Pointe Magazine article; poetry journals and awards. She and her sister Kathi Byam form the duo “Flute Meets Poem.” She served for five years on the CT Dance Alliance Board.
